How long ago did the first human walk on earth?
In: Science, Old Testament, Creation
According to the latest discoveries and theories, the genus Homo first came on the scene 2.3 to 2.4 million years ago, while the species Homo sapiens came into being 250,000 to 400,000 years ago. These estimates involve variables, suppositions and resulting theories that are employed to approximate the age of fossils. Note that the time line range for the genus is far smaller than the time line range given for the species. That is despite the fact that the genus might have appeared 10 times as long ago as the species. This calls into question calculations of the age of fossils and to layers of rock in the earth. Some people think the earth is only 6,000 years old. They take literally a scripture that likens a day in man's time to 1,000 years in God's time. Others regard this as another allegory or simile in a book full of allegories and parables. In other words, the scripture could just as easily have compared a day in man's time to 1 million or 1 billion years in God's time. Some do not suppose to know how God created earth or the first humans, only believing that he did so in a manner consistent with the laws of the universe, of which we know only a few.
How long did dinosaurs live on Earth?
Dinosaurs lived on earth for over 160 million years. They were the dominant terrestrial vertebrates from the late Triassic period (around 230 million years ago) to the end of the Cretaceous period (around 65 million years ago). After the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction event all but a few species of birds became extinct.
